Redefining Ability

Writer's picture: MESHMESH

In a world where inclusivity is a growing priority, two inspiring NGOs stands out for their efforts to empower individuals with disabilities by helping them channel their creativity into handicrafts. They are MESH and Society for Child Development (SCD), they are not just providing jobs; they are building a community where ability is redefined, and dignity is restored through the power of art and craftsmanship.

The Mission

To create a society where people with disabilities are empowered, valued, and included. SCD’s mission is to provide sustainable livelihoods for men and women with disabilities by training them in various handicraft techniques and offering a platform to showcase and sell their creations through organisations like MESH who provide, design and marketing support.

The Need for Such Initiatives

According to global statistics, men and women with disabilities face limited opportunities for employment, resulting in economic dependency. Despite their potential, many are overlooked in the workforce. SCD and MESH bridge that gap by recognizing the untapped potential in the individuals and provides them with the tools to succeed.

How It Works

1.      Available crafts

SCD’s artisans hand craft item in pottery, weaving, embroidery, painting, and woodwork. These programs are tailored to each individual’s abilities, ensuring that everyone can participate and thrive.

2.      Accessible Workspaces

To accommodate various disabilities, SCD ensures that their workspaces are accessible and inclusive, equipped with tools and resources designed for people with different needs. Everyone is treated with respect and each one’s talents are put to good use and showcased.

3.      Fair Wages and Economic Empowerment

Artisans are compensated fairly for their work, helping them achieve self financial dependency. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from sales is reinvested into the organization to expand its reach and resources. In addition, all the raw material from for the crafting such as papers or cardboards or other such needs are often recycled thus, not only is the NGO helping these artisans but is also environmentally helpful.

4.      Market Access

SCD takes stalls at several events that are held in the capital of Delhi, to showcase and sell the artisans’ products. MESH also attends out-door sales and has a shop but primarily exports products to fair trade customers around the world. MESH also channels orders to SCD from international buyers. From intricately woven scarves to hand-painted ceramics, each piece tells a story of resilience and creativity. Along with the stories of the artisans who made them… so that people who buy such things may know the people who worked to create those pieces.

Beyond Handicrafts: Building Confidence and Community

While the primary focus is on providing employment and financial independence to these artisans, SCD also offers a community to help artisans build confidence and foster a sense of belonging. The organization’s efforts have led to a ripple effect in local communities, spreading awareness and reducing stigma associated with disabilities.

How You Can Support

If this story resonates with you, consider supporting MESH in one of the following ways:

Purchase Handcrafted Items: Every purchase helps an artisan with disabilities achieve financial independence.

Volunteer: Share your skills in helping the NGO out with advertising or help with marketing initiatives.

Communicate: Tell others about our NGOs as well and help more people join our cause and help us in it.

Conclusion

Organizations like MESH and SCD remind us of the immense potential that lies within every individual, regardless of their abilities. These NGOs are not only transforming lives but also reshaping societal perceptions. When we invest in people, we create a world where everyone has a chance to shine. When two organisations do so in tandem the impact is further strengthened.

Let’s celebrate these men and women and the organizations that support them by championing their cause and spreading the message of empowerment and hope. Together, we can craft a more inclusive future.
